Entries for January, 2011

This isn't really a resolution (I don't believe in them), but I will be writing here more regularly. I am targeting two solid posts a week here as a start.

A lot has been going on lately, and I need to write a lot of it out.

Stay tuned!

So as a a part of my new training regimen, one of my trainers got me to buy a heart rate monitor watch (the Polar FT7). It's pretty cool - cause I can see how much of my workout session I spend burning fat, and what is fitness improvement.

What was particulary interesting was how high my heart rate gets during exercising - my body just isn't used to it yet. For example, during yesterday's workout session, I went an average of 170bpm for an hour... with a maximum of 196. According to the Wikipedia graph for exercise zones, that's the max.

That's probably why I was superexhausted yesterday.

This email went out today.

Fellow MindTouchers -

It has been my pleasure working and getting to know all of you over the past six years, an incredible journey, which ends today. It’s with mixed emotions that I email you all with my farewell.  While I may be leaving, my admiration for MindTouch - the people, the product, and the experience -  will always be held dear to my heart.

In coming to this decision, and reflecting on the past, I'm taken aback by the enormity of our accomplishments. MindTouch took a simple idea and built an exceptional product and community experience. What was once a simple Mediawiki fork has become so much more - and our customers and millions of users who interact with our software on a daily basis are a testament to that.

I can't thank Steve and Aaron enough for the opportunity they gave me - I came in as just a software developer, and they provided the trust and support that me the professional growth to ship product, build teams, and be a part of something bigger than myself. For that, there's no way that words can express my gratitude to them. I am who I am professionally because of them, and I will eternally be in their debt.

I hope that I can remain in touch with all of you: for everything I love about MindTouch, I have loved the people the most. There's such a unique blend of smart, driven, and passionate people at this company, and I will be searching for a work environment with the same mix of people in the years to come.

My email address for anybody who wants to stay in touch is
royikim@gmail.com. I plan on staying in San Diego indefinitely, so I'll definitely swing by the office from time to time.

My previous favorite rap lyrics came from Tupac:

All respect to those who break their neck to keep their hoes in check
Cause oh they sweat a brother majorly
And I don't know why, your girl keeps paging me
She tell me that she needs me, cries when she leaves me
And every time she sees me, she squeeze me, lady take it easy!
Hate to sound sleazy, but tease me, I don't want it if it's that easy

They have recently been eclipsed by this stanza from Eminem:

Where the fuck is Kanye when you need him?
Snatch the mic from him, bitch I’mma let you finish in a minute
Yeah the rap is tight
But I’m tryna spit the greatest verse of all time
So you might want to go back to the lab tonight and um
Scribble out them rhymes you were going to spit
And start over from scratch and write new ones
But I’m afraid that it ain’t gonna make no difference
When I rip this stage and tear it in half tonight

Where I go I just don't know
I got to got to gotta take it slow.
When I find my piece of mind
I'm gonna give you some of my good time.

Where I go I just don't know
I might end up somewhere in Mexico.
When I find my piece of mind
I'm gonna keep you for the end of time.

I know 2011 would be a huge year of changes for me. First things first... my six year journey with MindTouch is over, effective last Friday.

To say I have mixed feelings about this would be an understatement. I invested a lot emotionally into the company, and while I am happy with the way things ended, I have a lingering feeling of unfinished business.

What's next? That deserves its own post, but the short of it will be starting a small business of my own. I'll write more about this.

Yesterday, at the Red Box kiosk:

Them (girl and guy couple): What are you returning?
Me: The Social Network
Girl: WE LOVE YOU! That's the one we want to watch!
Me: Oh, they were out?
Girl: Yeah, we checked on our way in.
Me: Well, it's your lucky day.
Guy: It sure is.
Girl: Every day is a lucky day for us.

I love that positivity.
