I've been sketching out ideas of what a new editor interface would look like. The editor is, by far, the most important interface for any users of Tabulas - getting this right will set the tone.

Today's task was getting a good baseline for a WYSIWYG experience. Here's the first version. Some things to note:

  • Custom fonts will play a heavy role in the update - I find myself writing more when I see nice text.
  • Eliminated double scrollbars - the editor expands to the height of the content
  • Since the content expands, the toolbar will follow you wherever you go
  • Many options in the toolbar have been eliminated. Styling in the new Tabulas for individual entries will only be done in HTML mode (i.e. advanced users). I've never been a big fan of letting users style their own posts - the template designers should have done a decent job of defining some defaults.

Let me know what you think!

Will there be an option to keep the current editor?

I would hope that the new editor would be much better than the old one, thus deprecating the old one.

I'd introduce both side by side, and work to improve the new one until the old one could be thrown away.

As the sole dev on Tabulas, I can't maintain multiple editors.

I understand. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the new editor. As it currently stands, however, I prefer the old.

I've always found the editor very convenient to work with. I've never had any problems with it, but the expanding content and the static editor would be great! I can't wait to try it out.

I also think that it's a great idea to let the other functions be done in the HTML mode. However, I find the insert media/video function quite convenient, too. Will that also be eliminated?

Nonetheless, I don't mind getting my hand dirty in the HTML mode. I think that will give me more freedom to play around with my individual entries. :) (but wuz a "markdown"? -_-' )

Yes, definitely will have a "embed video" option as well!

Cool, cool, cool. I'm excited about the new editor. I hope to be more of help in the future. Good luck! :D

I don't know if it's too much work on your end but perhaps incorporating Markdown with the editor would be a very nice advanced addition.

Do you really prefer Markdown over WYSIWYG? I could see Markdown being useful for a mobile experience... but besides that, I don't see the point.

Personally, I like Markdown because I can type my quick drafts in a text editor and when I feel that it's a done post, I just copy-paste it to the blog editor without the need to manually edit the post again to make links, blockquotes, etc.

But that's just me. I find it faster to type drafts in Notepad than logging in to Tabulas and creating a draft. Markdown would really help a lot in this type of workflow.
