I took out my new Canon Rebel XTI DSLR for a run tonight:

Tonight was mostly about familiarizing myself with the camera. I'm not horribly happy with the quality of these photos (although that's mostly the fault of the photog) ... they seem so ... sharp. Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can push the ISO on the Rebel up to 1600 to induce some of the graininess that makes film cameras so awesome. (I wonder if my color filters will have any effect on the B+W mode of the camera...)

These were all taken with the Xti. If i were you, I'd go with the Rebel XTI and save the money for some nice lens - lens do far more for picture quality than cameras (once you pass a certain threshold with cameras, that is).

Yah. I really like that wheely thing the 40d has. And I like that it's a bit more durable... however, it's so freaking heavy that I may just go with the Xsi/Xti just for that reason alone!

Isn't it a fantastic camera, Royo? I really dig its color depth and latitude.

i'm still not completely sold on it :) i come from the film background, and i'm not sure if the digital cameras could ever capture the richness of film positives... i think i'll be better able to speak to this in a few weeks.

Well, it's a trade-off. Who knows, digital may never approach a true filmic look, but there are things you can do to mimic it. Depth of Field manipulation, shutter speed, digital burning and dodging, etc.

Nice. But why not just go and get a 40D?

Don't have the money to ... it was double the cost of the XTi, and I'm honestly not sure how much "better" the pictures would turn up for that much money.

More than anything, I just wanted to get a digital SLR to get a feel for it ... been so long since I shot anything worthwhile that I figure my skills need to catch up to the equipment :)

but it's all about the look.
