What are some shortcomings of Tabulas?

What are some features you'd like to see?

Please try to be as specific as possible. Don't worry about relevancy; even if you think your idea is "far-out," post it below.

I'm currently starting to spec out the next iteration of Tabulas. The document I've written is quite long, but there's always room for more!

Remember, Tabulas was built around user-input and user-requested features. It only gets better if you make the effort to give criticism! Feel free to send this link to your friends and see if they have any ideas on how to improve the service.

But please, no "give us more free _____." That just won't fly here.

Edit: I've been banging out a brain dump of possible future feature developments for Tabulas. It's kinda lengthy, but if you're interested to see what features might be developed for Tabulas, check it out. I've been sharing a few of the interesting thoughts that have been posted below already...

Hey, Roy! I really want to buy a paid account but Paypal doesn't support my country and snail mailing it would be more expensive. I saw this site: http://greenzap.com . It's like Paypal but it supports all the countries. Please try to check it out, thanks, and so I can finally have a PAID ACCOUNT! :)

Hey Roy~

We all love tabulas so much, so we've written over 60+ comments on improving it XD.

Sorry this is a bit late. These are the ones that I'd love most (in order of most wanted):

1. FRIENDS GROUPS please! That'd be so awesome. I'm in dire need of these.

2. Backing up includes comments as well.

3. More notification of tabulas changes. Maybe a (optional) mailing list or some alerts in our message centres?

4. More flexibility / customisation with the google ads. So that we can freely express our support XD. How about if we generate enough revenue, we can get a paid account?

5. Trackback option would be nice~!

6. When breaking an entry, maybe make the breaking unlimited instead of to just one. Also, maybe the breaking doesn't lead of to a totally different page, but just hides the unloaded content until clicked. If that makes any sense.

We love you tabulas!! .... Err, I mean Roy!
Comment posted on April 24th, 2005 at 08:57 PM
6: multiple breaks are already supported

Just 3 simple suggestions:

1. Display the number of entries in the category roll either in the sidebar or profile page.

2. More info about the entry in the "Edit Entry" panel like its privacy status and the category it belongs to.

3. List/roll the favorite entries.

^_^

You know how we already can change the comments text? (The "comment text" and "existing comment" in the styles page) Why don't you split the "existing comment" to maybe "one comment" and "more than one comment" because sometimes you would see pages with "1 comments" for the comment link and it sort of annoys me. haha~~

when we make custom layouts sometimes the required navigation bar dosent come over the top of the image my friends and i have tryed everything to fix this :( maybe you could make the navi bar into a java script so it stays ontop of everything? i dunno XD

stop using position:absolute in your css.

- I'd love to be able to export my entries. There was an option for rss feeds before but I've been everywhere and all I found was the one for the categories option. I actually want this so much for my friendster account.

- I also think the smilies pop-up box should be optioned to be embedded or not on the the post entry section and that the smilies appear where your cursor exactly are and not always at the end of the entry. That would save a lot of copy and paste especially for people who love using the smilies. :) Or better yet, for us to be allowed to implement our own set of smilies and somehow synchronise it with the current ones.

- also there are lots of features that are not explained clearly and leaves people (or me for a fact) without a clear idea of the functions of a certain feature. For example: the RSS feeds at the category and syndication options.

- on color schemes, 1 or 2 more of it wouldn't harm as well. :P

Other than those I am very content and happy with tabulas and all the nice features. Keep up the good work. ^__^

1. Crossposting to more blog services! :) I would love crossposting on myspace and friendster.

2. privacy for the content pages.

3. It would also be good if we could arrange the order of the content pages.

4. ALT tags for the smileys

5. more media file uploads

6. making Tabulas skinnable would be cool too!

7. it's also great if we could group our friends

8. Friends only posts in tabulas should be crossposted as friends only too in LJ

9. It would also be cool if we could export the older entries to other blogtools.

1) privacy status for the content pages... so the you can set the content page to be viewable by everyone, friends, or only yourself. right now, all content pages are viewable by everyone.

2) if you're logged in, have an "edit" link appear at the end of the entry (e.g., next to the "comments" link)... so if you want to edit a post, (this is particlarly helpful for older posts) you don't have to sift through pages of "edit entries" to find the entry you want to edit. for example, if you're logged in and reading your old entry .../000000.html, there's a link that will take you to ...?edit=000000

3) increase the "recently added entries" (on the left of the control panel) to more than 4... 6 maybe?

4) a "memories" feature... so you can add certain entries to a list of memories that you can go back to them easily.

:)

hmm, just a thought: a basic editor or even an advanced editor for content pages too, not just the journal entries ... it'd be helpful for the html noobies.

I'd like if it were easier to be able to read threaded comments. The boxes around each comment helps, but it'd be nice to show the threaded comments by using indents.

You can do this currently, you just need to set css accordingly. Ask at the forums for more info on how to do it.
Comment posted on April 20th, 2005 at 06:53 AM
it would be really nice to see some things like:

1. a search tool within our own entries, on the 'edit entries' page. (i think is suggested this before...)

2. being able to pick the color of the navbar since we can't hide it and it has to be in a fixed position. maybe not customisable in terms of any old colors we like, but a selection of them, like Blogger has.

3. making custom layouts more tables-friendly. noticed that all default templates use layers, but when i use tables to create a custom layout, the tables generally screw up. it is impossible to highlight or copy text within my entries correctly. implementing the same idea to non-Tabulas websites works fine... so i think it's just the templating engine here for some reason.

Otherwise, tabulas is still going good! =)

im using an imac and the basic editor doesnt really work for me. i couldnt attach any images, smileys, etc. if ever i post entries with smileys, it's because i know some of the codes...

i hope tabulas can be more mac-friendly...
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 07:45 PM
I suspect that this might be more a web browser issue, than a mac issue, per se. What browser are you using?
But there are some differencs in diplay output between macs and pc's. Hard to watch out for when you dont have a mac inhouse. That's one reason Adobe developed PDF, to address just this kind of issue.
Maybe we can get Roy to buy one of the lil' $500 micro-macs as a test bed?? ;)
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 06:12 PM
Those video player thingies are pretty cool! They could bring their own webstorage, or buy from you...

My idea is to create many more templates that are more complete with what people typically get/want after the are on Tabs for a while.
Much of people's early frustation is from trying to implement what they see that others have right away, so...
Maybe you could make a deal with Dodo (or others), as some of the most common stuff people have are from her. And if you made things like her Agenda even easier to update and manage through Tabulas, so much the better! With stuff like that in pre-built templetes, that non-paid could see but not use, that would motivate a lot of people to pony up to the paying bar, I think...

One thing I'd love is to be able to have a list to all your friends' Tabulases in the sidebar. Like a "blogroll" or whatever it's called. =)

And to be able to list the links by category in the sidebar too.

And wow, we'll be able to use our domains and stuff with Tabulas now? =D Cool! Will subdomains work too? Because I don't think my parents would let me register another domain name... xP

I know it's possible to do it by adding all your friends to your link list, or by adding a list to the code for your layout. But I was just wondering if it would be possible to make it easier to do this.
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 07:37 PM
Yes, easier is always better. A tag to out that would be cool. But are we talking mutual friends, top 20, or ?. Maybe tag parameters could handle those kind of issues too... :)

An userfriendly and with all the features applicable as to if the user was to log in - but would not have to.

An applet that would enable a user to just click on it and be automatically logged in to update their journal in a smaller screen - with all the font/html friendly features but without the hassel of typing in the site and just one click away to enable frequent updates.

generally, i have no problem with tabulas, except when that sudden change occured. for me its pretty good. but one thing that i noticed is that when i look at tabulas in a pc and a mac displays are different. in pc i can view it just fine, but in mac, the tables are displayed differently.. or am i just used to seeing the tabulas on a pc??

hmm. another thing is that can you make a notification that says when a friend has changed his/her username? if that is possible...
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 07:43 AM
when you're adding friends and when im tyring to change the names...it refuses to change it...it says "Error" and that the user does not exist.

i suggest, that tabulas come up with some sort of profile thing for each user so that way we know the actual name of the person and not just by their tabulas name...

or...you can just go back and fix what tabulas has now...the "Error" thing

hi Roy,

i think i've already mentioned this to you a while back. it's about the archive/import entries feature. it'd be great to be able to import old entries from another platform like MT, wordpress, blogger etc. so that users won't have to start from scratch when they decide to jump ship from another blogtool.

Tabulas is better off compatible with Macromedia Flash.

Check my site: <a href="http://www.freewebs.com/understan" rel="nofollow">www.freewebs.com/understan</a>

I really wanted to make a Flash blog in Tabulas.

A feature I'd really be excited to have would be to have friends-groups. Meaning your friends can be filtered into different groups and given different access rights to certain entries.

Other than that, Tabulas is perfect with its simplicity and great features already.

How about a new subscription type like what was said in the <a href="http://www.tabulas-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=793">forums</a>?

Polls and Surveys attached (embedded?) to entries?
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 01:28 AM
And on the previous post, if a user turns off RSS, then don't display their rss url in their profile. That would be easy to document: The user has turned off RSS.

My Yahoo has a way to send an immediate update to Yahoo that a rss update needs to be done when you create a new entry. Mine is:
<a href="http://api.my.yahoo.com/rss/ping?u=http://aces.tabulas.com/mikeymike/rss.xml">shortened link</a> [api.my.yahoo.com]
It would be nice if you could tell My Yahoo to be updated like you can for LJ and Xanga. Not exactly the same thing, but just as handy... Kind of gaming Yahoo's methodology, but it's frustrating waiting for hours sometimes for a new Tabs entry to be listed. They have an algorithm based on how often you usually update.

Also, for people with Firefox especially, there are dictionary extensions - and the default FF search box. It would be really nice if you could call one of these up (like dictionary.com) "on the fly" while entering text to offer up spelling suggestions. That is, pass the word in question directly...
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 08:57 AM
Tabulas can tell My Yahoo when you update. Go to your ping options and add http://api.my.yahoo.com/RPC2 to the list. After that, every entry you post with "Ping Sites" checked will tell My Yahoo you've updated.
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 07:53 PM
That's really cool! Thanks a bunch! =)
I'm gonna put this in the little collection I have of Tabulas RSS stuff in my Contents area...
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 12:55 AM
Maybe specify the complete rss url in the users Profile. (Like Homepage, Weblog, etc are) Just right-click to save it. Easier to document too, no matter what server they are on. And perhaps create a tag to allow a templete to create a "XML" icon on every page, like some other sites have...
I think that's an awesome idea to become an ISP essentially! As long as they are Paid Tabulas users first, so the focus doesn't get skewed. I mean there are plently of cheap ISPs out there. Without the Tabulas orientation, you wouldn't have a lot to offer.
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 08:52 AM
It would be very nice to have the RSS URI in the profile. It can be worked out using the server a person is on and their name, but the complete URL would be handier for people who aren't familiar with Tabulas (and must be converted to our ways, precioussss).

There used to be a template tag that would output an RSS button with the correct link but I can't find it in the 2.0 documentation. If it doesn't exist anymore, it should be brought back, IMHO. Those orange buttons are instantly recognisable by RSS fans.
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 05:31 PM
I certainly agree. The simpler to document and understand, the better. I've never seen Tabulas RSS documented in the "outside world" like LJ or Xanga. Be nice if was easier than most other bloggers to document. And the XML icon would the easiest of all...
Comment posted on April 18th, 2005 at 10:10 PM
Ask and ye shall receive. Understand that I'm very happy with Tabulas as it is. The only things that spring to mind are minor.

XFN support in the link list editor
Ability to associate images (from the gallery, perhaps) with links on the link list
Translating "private" status when crossposting
Translating "friends-only" status when crossposting to blog tools that support it
Translating Tabulas break to lj-cut on LJ crossposts, as previously noted ;)
Use URIs like "http://www.tabulas.com/~roy/724608.html#comment" as comments URI in RSS feed (makes it handier to follow replies from Bloglines)
RSS feed for comments
Custom friends groups and ability to filter posts to them -- I expect these would be limited for free users, but it would be nice to have them limited rather than not at all

Ability to specify URI of your own FOAF document, which the Tabulas-generated FOAF file could reference -- LJ has something like this in the profile settings. The LJ-generated FOAF file contains a reference to the user-specified FOAF file instead of using the profile data. Example: <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/msree/data/foaf/">http://www.livejournal.com/users/msree/data/foaf/</a>

I am seconding sixty_four's request for a Tabulas posting favelet, something akin to Blogger's BlogThis or WordPress' Press It! I keep forgetting to link people from whom I get memes -- a bookmark that opened a new window with the Tabulas post editor, and auto-filled the new post with a link using their blog URI and title, would help so much.
Comment posted on April 18th, 2005 at 10:18 PM
"Use URIs like "http://www.tabulas.com/~roy/724608.html#comment" as comments"

I think Tabulas already does this?
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 08:31 AM
Bah, I worded that poorly. Tabulas does do that already, but not in the RSS feeds, which is what I meant and didn't manage to say. My apologies.
Comment posted on April 18th, 2005 at 10:14 PM
Could you clarify the XFN and associate images with link list requests?
Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 08:42 AM
Frankly, I'm stealing these ideas from WordPress. Their fancy link list is the only feature that makes me consider using WP; Tabulas already does pretty much everything else I want.

By <a href="http://gmpg.org/xfn/">XFN support</a>, I mean (ideally) a Tabulas link list interface similar to the <a href="http://gmpg.org/xfn/creator">XFN Creator</a>. A simple field where the user could enter XFN values to be applied to the REL attribute would suffice, but a list of selectable values would draw in more users -- it's pretty clear what it means to select "me" as the value for a link, but unclear what exactly to type into a blank field.

By "associating an image with a link" -- WordPress thieving again. The WP link list panel has a slot for "image URL", which can then appear in lieu of the text link. With that tool, I've worked up a list of my real-life friends' blogs (mostly LJs) where their default usericon links to their blog. It seems silly, I know, but I like it a lot. Especially after someone changes their LJ name, it's easier to identify them in the list by their graphic than by their new name.
Comment posted on April 18th, 2005 at 09:54 PM
Oh, and improve the documentation substantially. I know it's no fun, maybe you can get users to help... like a wiki or something. I know devoted users would help... Especially irrating is all the 1.x info still in there (which is now useless) and can't find 2.x updated info. Almost all info should be in the docs, not have to go begging in the Forum. This will make the product appear more user-friendly, and in the long run, need less support.
Also, maybe something like a help "bubble" on each window with context-sensitive help for that page?

On a lighter note, here's a book I think you might like. :) Somebody's Daughter:

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0807083887/sixapart-20/002-1087683-7775218">shortened link</a> [www.amazon.com]
Comment posted on April 18th, 2005 at 09:37 PM
What about, like what a member of the forums said, to make our custom style become "skins" and allow our visitor to choose which "skin" they want to view. That would be cool.

Also, why don't you make tabulas convert the "break" tags to "lj-cut" tags when it is crossposted to lj? :D

Oh yes, still waiting for that custom friend group feature :P

I've been thinkin' on this very issue. Adding Radio Blog was brilliant! Especially with the way you implemented it... Paid Only from the start, Complete menu system for it, and allowing Tabulas RBers to share songs (and great for you as less space/uploads required).
So, I guess my comment is to add features that normally require your own domain, php, etc. I really don't think most people want to go through all that, but don’t think that there is an alternative. I mean then you could make the case that people actually SAVE money!
Currently, I really like that feature at Friendster blog function that lets you add books/music/films with a picture and link to Amazon nicely arranged. It’s called "Typelists".
<a href="https://blogs.www.friendster.com/t/app/lists">https://blogs.www.friendster.com/t/app/lists</a>
I think it's based on Movable Type's stuff. So, including this type of functionality would be way cool! That’s a super-common desire - to talk about your favorite books/movies/CDs. So...

would it be possible to save a draft of a future entry that is not yet finished, without having to copy and paste the entry into microsoft word or something? Also, tabulas needs hot bikini chicks built into some of the templates. Hope that helps, Mr. Kim.

okay well i can only think of one thing, and this would mostly likely being only me wanting something like this because well, bad luck is my friendly neighbor.

putting a extra link on the top navigation bar; saying "write an entry" or whatever, when you click it .. it's a pop-up of the entry editor.

i don't know how it would help but to me it would be more clean and without all the click clicks, and what if i wanna keep the page i already have up? oh well thats my 2 cents.

dorie (guest)

Comment posted on April 19th, 2005 at 02:47 PM
But clicking on the link to go to the control panel already leads to the "write an entry" page... and if you want to open it in a new window (or tab if you're using Firefox like me =D), all you have to do is right-click, then select "open in new window/tab"... =P

And adding an extra link would be a bad idea for us 800x600-resolution users. xP There's already too much in the top bar, and when a user has a really long username it kinda looks screwed up.

One feature I'd love to see isn't really a feature... Just being able to have the less-than-three symbol in comments. :)

I really love tabulas the way it is and I can't think of anything to improve it... I guess the only thing would be a client similar to that of the LJ one would be rather nifty.
