I'm "jumping on the bandwagon" so to speak. I've seen this type of post before, so I'll just give it a try.

Ask me any question. Serious or flippant, I don't care. Curious about my useless thoughts on a particular subject? Care to know who I think is hot? Curious how I got the aliases 'honging' and 'caletucker?' Ask away. I'll try to answer all questions truthfully. If you're too embarassed to use your username, feel free to post anonymously.

if you could be any flavor of ice cream, which would you be?

What's your favorite item on the menu at Hector's?

I would be red raspberry so people could lick me all over ....

Double cheeseburger with bacon in pita with everything and a side of chili cheese fries. Of course, my stomach rarely agrees with me the next morning (for some reason, I always eat at Hector's around 1am).

Do you plan to leave North Carolina sometime in the near future (to live long term, ie. over a year)?

Do you plan on ever returning to North Carolina if you do leave?

What do you love the most about North Carolina? The least?

What do you like about Korea and Korean culture the most? What do you like about it the least?

What are your opinions on the future of the Korean-American community in the United States?

Do you have any plans for your next adventure overseas?

Why do you love K&W Cafeteria so much?

Will you be around this Christmas so we can go feast at K&W again?

AH SO MANY QUESTIONS.

1,) I had plans, but they've been changed.
2.) Yes, most definitely. I think it's a lovely place to raise kids ... it would also be nice to get a small cabin in the woods and live up there.
3.) The weather and the pace of life. I don't like having nothing to do.
4.) Short answer: things i like: Convenience and girls. things i don't like: The smells of Korea.
5.) I hope less "cliqueness" in the west and the bigger metro areas; I see the creation of this "supernodes" of korean culture in america as NOT helping with the issues of 'integration.'
6.) I would love to go to Tibet.
7.) I don't know. I just LOVE cafeteria food. I think this has something to do with the fact that when I was in elementary school, my parents couldn't afford to let me buy cafeteria food except once a week, so I always valued it. Maybe I overtreasured the moment or something.
8.) YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. do you read?
2. what do you read?
3. what have you read that you'd recommend?
4. what do you intend to read?

ohhhh man. i just started reading tons of books again.

2.) i tend to read technical books, philosophical books, or non-fictional books. i'm not a *huge* fan of fiction (comparatively speaking).
3.) i think 'joel on software' is a great book for any developer... i loved 'sex drugs and cocoa puffs' by chuck klosterman for its witty essays. i've always been a huge fan of orson scott card (this dates back to high school and middle school) for his ender's game series (pretty good fictional reading for guys, not sure if girls like it as much). i just started reading 'the kite runner' which has been quite a page turner.
4.) amazon's wishlist is the best tool for setting up "to-read" lists ... i've put up my "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?tag=roy-20&path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fregistry%2F2GXQZWHYBUO9M">to-read</a> list there.

1. What are your plans for the future, after college?

2. If there was one thing you could change about your past, what would it be?

3. Why "Cale Tucker"? Are you a closet Titan AE fan?

4. What is the meaning of life?

5. Why am I so awesome?

1.) I'm not entirely sure yet. I'm going to burn that bridge when I get there.

2.) I'd have been much more social with the girls in high school. In retrospect, I really missed out in getting to know some cool chicas back then.

3.) I'm not sure. I just remember that movie made a huge impression on me after I watched it.

4.) To eat.

5.) You aren't. ;)

you can work with anyone in the world, to do whatever you want, (start a company, invent something, or something else).

who with, and doing what?

I'd like to work with someone more business savvy (Paul Allen?) to work on expanding Tabulas to be more business-oriented.

Or I'd like to run as lt. governor alongside Charles Barkley as he runs for governor of Alabama. ;)

If you were stuck on a desert island for the rest of your life, would you rather escape by taking a helicopter with a bomb on it that would arrive in 20 years, or would you wait for Pete, who said he would be there in five minutes?
Comment posted on November 30th, 2004 at 05:24 PM
oh god. this is a hard one to answer. in the end, i would probably wait for the helicopter. pete would probably run into a "hunny" and get totally distracted. plus i hate getting the door for people ... (i have fittingly decided to use the "my little pony" usericon for this post).

1) do you have any plans of becoming the next bill gates?
2) have you ever thought of committing suicide?
3) do you like your parent or would you be better off without them?
Comment posted on November 30th, 2004 at 05:23 PM
1.) no. well, i mean i'd love to be in a position to influence technologies and implement projects, but i don't think i could deal with the level of fame he has to deal with.
2.) yes. i think everybody thinks about death and to a certain extent suicide. what matters is how seriously they take these thoughts. i would even go so far to say that it's really <em>not</em> normal to think about not taking your own life.
3.) i love my parents - i couldn't live without them!

whats an emerging/new technology that you're excited about? and why?

Three things I'm really looking forward to:

1.) More CSS standards
CSS is kind of a haphazard set of standards; there's so much hackery required to get stuff working (reminds me of the Netscape 4.x/IE 4.x age with table hackery). I haven't read much on it, but they're expanding CSS to much more powerful, which will hopefully lead to even simpler HTML docs (no more div-happy pages, hopefully).

2.) Greater DOM support
DOM is where it's at. Javascript DOM provides all the opportunities to make user interfaces on the web match those written as client-side applications. No more do we have to deal with this crappy HTML forms that are just static .... we can truly guide "Average Joe" through the whole process with the detail of client side apps. Google GMail was the first demonstration of this, but mark my words ... that's only the beginning.

As soon as I stabilize the PHP backend, I'm going to take a good long hard look at DOM and work on it. All those WYSIWYG editors are really sweet too.

3.) Flash?
Man, I keep vacillating with Flash. On one hand, it sucks for all the obvious reasons. Then some company like <a href="http://ludicorp.com">Ludicorp</a> goes and makes a site as nice as <a href="http://flickr.com">Flickr</a> and my thoughts towards Flash changes.

I hope that DOM can eventually do most of what Flash can do....

4.) Greater interoperability
Interoperability is still largely a myth; these standards are OUT there, but I don't see much happening in terms of tapping into APIs and such. We'll see.

You know, wireless has supposed to "erupt" in the states for the past X years ... and I'm totally psyched about what it <em>could</em> do ... but coverage in the states sucks in general... i really look forward to the day i can get a blackberry and manage my servers from it. gah.

and partially because i've been required to write a case study regarding kyoto protocols, i've had to do a lot of reading on alternate fuel sources ... i'm really interested to see if they can really make a viable solar energy source on a mass-consumer scale.

but most of my world revolves around web-related development, so i don't really keep track of too may technical developments besides that ...

when did you decide you wanted to start all these web communities and how did you go about starting the process? (reading books, articles on the net, asking friends, etc.)
Comment posted on November 30th, 2004 at 03:21 PM
Well, on some level I've been running online communities for a long time now (jaymee.org/jaymee and npforums.com [although neopages.net has had previous iterations of forums before]). The extention to blogging came primarily from my love of the medium (I've been blogging since '98 or so). I decided that I didn't really like Xanga, LJ, or Blogger (and remember that this is before Blogger was bought out by Google and before Typepad was launched, so the market was really small) so I thought I could make a better product.

The main problem was overcoming the technical know-how, I had never programmed a line of code before; I had mostly modified Perl scripts before... so learning PHP was done with online tutorials and reading the manual (the manual really is a saving grace). Of course, as I got better, I ran into more complex problems, which forums were great at solving (devshed.com).

The biggest problem (esp. for a single developer) was not feature creeping too much; if you remember in the original days, I had waaaayyy too much time on my hands so all these features would come left and right. And then the architecture sucked, which led to me deciding to rewrite the whole system from scratch (doh!).

Web communities are fun! But I still don't feel like this is a hugely integrated community yet; hopefully I can really get down and dirty and get some really solid community features.
